I started out today by having the kids read a Billy Collins poem called "Introduction to Poetry," and then read quotes by T.S. Eliot and e.e. cummings about what a poem is and what a poet is. All three of these pieces sparked some debate and conversation, which is always the goal.
Prior to this discussion, half of the class read the Eliot, the other half the cummings, and then partnered with someone of the opposite group and gave the Cliffs Notes to their partner.
While this was going on, I was standing at the podium, taking attendance, and listening to the conversations around the room. Kids often aren't smart enough to realize that even though I'm not looking at them, I'm still listening. I learned that in EDU 392.
One girl turned to her friend, and said with shock and awe, "HUMAN BEINGS!? I always thought it was human beans!"
Yes, Jerryauna, you're right. It's human beans.

HAHA! Oh lord Kerrie, that made my day. Thank you for sharing that!
I too am not fond of poetry, but I think teaching it to younger folks would make it a bit easier - and as you've shown us, a bit more entertaining!
hahaha.
I love those moments. During my student teaching I always found myself overestimating how much my students knew and comprehended.
it saddens me that you don't have the same love of poetry (read: billy collins) as I do.
