I liked the show from the pilot episode, and when it was hyped up during So You Think You Can Dance last summer. (I guess this is the equivalent of "I liked the band before they were big.")
And while, for the next 2 weeks, LOST will hold my heart at 9pm on Tuesday nights, I do watch the episodes online to catch up.
But I do have some beef with the show. And I think some of my complaints would be complaints I would have for any tv show set in a high school (just as, I imagine, people who work in an office have similar complaints about shows set in offices). I suppose the easiest way to do this is in a list:
- Is there any learning that goes on at their school? It seems like these teachers really aren't teaching and nobody ever goes to a class other than cheerleading or glee club.
- The members of the glee club is too diversity-friendly (I know what you're thinking, how could anyone complain about that?) but they have the handicapped kid, the blond, the jock, the black girl, the bad kid, the Asian (two actually!), the flamboyant gay boy ... really all they're missing is an over-blown butch lesbian.
- If the school is always talking about its funding for the glee club, where do they get all of these matching outfits from?? If they're purchasing them on their own, that's an expensive club to be in.
- Rachel is annoying. She reminds me of a friend of my sister's, who is also named Rachel, who has a striking physical resemblance, as well as a over bearing personality.
- When the club breaks out into song during rehearsal, out of thin air appears a band (usually some guitars and a set of drums, occasionally horns will appear) and they're always manned by students. Except for the piano guy. It's a middle aged man with a goatee, long hair and glasses. Apparently nobody else in the school can play the piano (or at least never any of the kids) and Mr. Schu can't go over and hit a key on the piano to give them a note. But this guy sits at the piano every day during rehearsal, and jams out on the piano. Why couldn't they have given this job to a student??
- I was annoyed when Kristin Chenoweth was on -- not because I think she is annoying, I really loved her on Pushing Daisies but because I don't think most people could appreciate her vocal talent. I was relieved to read that all of the characters have vocal backgrounds, and many of them have appeared on Broadway, but I think the average non-musical knowing person wouldn't realize the talent that they have on that show, and just assume that people are singing for them.
Will this keep me from watching the show? Probably not. But I do have to say that I am getting pretty sick of hearing them talk about the Regional show. Just have the damn show already and move on!
