obedience

"And I was lead by the Spirit, not knowing beforehand the things which I should do."
1 Nephi 4:6

Today in church I was asked to give a talk -- a sort of farewell if you will. I was asked to speak on obedience. At first I thought it was because I had done something disobedient, but then was put at ease by my branch president.

While I was in the throws of trying to make a decision about which job I should choose, I received a blessing from a friends fiance. In the blessing, he told me to go back and read a verse of scripture that was significant to me, and there I would find the answer. As soon as those words were spoken, this scripture came to mind. It is a scripture that sometimes gets put in the shadow of a more familiar one (1 Nephi 3:6 -- "I will go and do the things....").

As I was preparing for this talk, I went back and read chapters 3 and 4 of 1 Nephi. Nephi had been commanded to go and retrieve the plates from Laban. He didn't know why he was going, what he was doing, but he was being obedient. When I went back and read the scripture, I immediately knew what I needed to do, and I was put at peace.

As I begin to pack and prepare for my move it is becoming more and more real to me. I hear my friends talk about plans that they have, even for the day that I leave that I want to attend. It's hard for me to think that their lives will continue on without me, and my life will continue on without them right by my side.

I sometimes start to think that it would be ok if I just stayed here. But then I snap into reality and know that I need to grow and learn. There are going to be times of loneliness, but I'll never be alone. I have high hopes of coming back to Ohio in late September for my friends Mike and Catherine's wedding. I hope I can spring it...

Happy Sunday to you all!
