CATS and I go waaay back. My parents saw it in London, and my sister and I grew up on the soundtrack. We would make up dances to all of our favorite songs and skip around the house. I still know every word to every song.
The season ticket package we have affords us the chance to swap out a show we don't want for a show that's not included in the package. CATS was that show (we swapped out Blue Man Group). When we switch out tickets, we don't have our "usual" seats. Sometimes they're better (more leg room). But a few weeks ago we sat down for CATS in seats we had never been in before.
T and I had a few minutes to chat before the show started, and during that time we were comparing these seats to our regular seats. "The stage seems closer, doesn't it?" "Are we more centered?" "I think so." We knew that we have been in this theatre before, but just couldn't decide what show it was that we saw here.
After some long, hard thinking, we (shamefully) came to the conclusion that we were not, in fact, in a different theatre. This is the same theatre we had been in for all but ONE of our previous shows. Yes, we were in different seats, but we were in the same theatre -- same row even! *Face palm*
In other news, the show was amazing. While it's not very plot-heavy (but not for lack of trying on the part of our dear friend Andrew Lloyd Weber), it's surely entertaining. The cats are moving around the stage the entire time. And the way they move their bodies is remarkable. While the story of Skimbleshanks has always been my favorite, The Rum Tum Tugger was a hoot!
But I think the best part of the show, was being in these "new" seats -- and getting a lesson on perspective.
