Educator Library Card Ok, yes, all library cards a free, but with the Educator card at the Cuyahoga County Public Library, any educator can check up to 150 items out at one time, has extended time, and accrues fewer fines than you regular folk. And the extra nice thing is I've morphed it to my regular card, so when I forget to return my next book on tape, my fines will be less. Thank you CCPL!
Free Burrito We all know I love Chipotle, and we all know I love free, so you can only imagine how much I love a free burrito. Last spring a Chipotle popped into the dying town I work in. The manager there is an E-High grad and loves the school, so on Teacher Work Days (see below) we eat for free. Well, a free burrito. Sign me up!
Bookstore Educator Cards Both Borders Books and Barnes & Noble (how's that for alliteration?) offer Educator Discount Cards. I've been using my B&N (my preferred bookstore) card for years, and Boarders just hopped on the bandwagon. B&N offers 20% off, Boarders 25% off all purchases for your classroom, and twice annually has an Educator's week where all purchases are 30% off. *As a side note: I don't always use my card for it's intended purposes, strictly speaking. One might argue that not all of my book purchases will be taught in my classroom, but really, that's splitting hairs. Although, I did go in once to buy a DVD for class purposes (to be shown the next day) and was denied my discount because "it only covers classroom purchases." Really? How can you be so sure that the Stuff on My Cat book I bought last week was being used in my classroom when O Brother, Where Art Thou? wasn't going to be used as a comparison to Homer's The Odyssey?? I argue that, because I am an English teacher, any and all reading goes to further my own learning, and will, at some point be incorporated into my curriculum. So there.
Teacher Work Days Because we don't work the other 178 days of the school year, we are given 2 Teacher Work Days. On these days we do work. Work work work. We sit in meetings and discuss important things like teacher parking, what constitutes a "hoodie" (more on this later), and if it's alright for men to use the phone in the teacher's lounge marked "Ladies." We usually get to come in late that day, and sometimes can sneak out early, and get to take a long lunch. Also, we get to use the bathroom at will. Like, when the urge strikes. Instead, like every other school day, where I have to wait from 7:50am to 1pm because I have no break. But who's counting? Not me, until I send the school my bill for my UTI.
Summers Off Need I say more?
Free Office Supplies To an office supply junkie, this is a dream come true. At the beginning of each semester, our school's treasurer puts this magical pink paper in our mailbox, we check off the fun supplies we want like legal pads (small? or large??), staples, sticky notes, dry erase markers (in a rainbow of colors), tape, scissors (you know, the chinsy metal ones with the painted black handles, when the points always break off leaving you with a straight point at the end? yep, they mass manufacture those. jealous, huh?), blue pens, black pens and red pens. Anything you can imagine. Then after you fill out the pink sheet, in about 3 days, the desired supplies arrive in your mailbox. It's like Christmas, twice a year.
A Tax Write-off Yep! The standard is $200 without receipts. If you keep your recipes (sha, right!) you can write off the whole lot. This is to cover the costs that you put into your own classroom. Which, believe you me, I spend WAY more than $200 a year, and would probably do well to keep my receipts but, Hi, have we met, I'm lazy. *I've just learned, as of late, that some states provide money up-front, at the beginning of the year for teachers to furnish their rooms. Incredible!
I guess that's about it. I know you're all super jealous, because really, teachers don't do anything. errr...
I guess I should add to this list some bit about helping kids learn or making a difference but we have people like Rachel Zoe and Kim Kardashian to cover those bases.

plus teachers look like zooey deschanel.
Well color me jealous. I keep going back and forth with teaching. Do they allow possible teachers like me to shadow an english teacher (you) for a day, to witness a day-in-the-life kind of thing? Because that would be helpful.
